An American actress, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, as Margaret Brainard Hamilton. She won the ASFFHF Special Award in 1979 and the Telluride Festival Silver Award in 1981. Margaret Hamilton married Paul Boynton Meserve (1931-1938) and they had one child before their divorce. Her works include The Wizard of OZ (1939), Nothing Sacred (1937), 13 Ghosts (1960), and Brewster McCloud (1970). She attended Hathaway Brown School and graduated from Wheelock College. She also practiced acting in children's theater, worked as a children's teacher while she was a member of the Junior League in Cleveland, and made many films before performing her most distinguished and successful role, "Almira", the evil witch of the West, in MGM's masterpiece The Wizard of Oz. She died in Salzburg, Connecticut, USA, on May 16, 1985, of a heart attack.
