He was an American actor and writer, born on February 16, 1895, in San Jose, California, USA, as Vernon Bruce Dent. He entered the entertainment industry in the early 1920s while traveling with a singing group in Southern California. He appeared in more than 400 silent and sound films, where he collaborated with well-known actors. He participated in several short films for Columbia Pictures as a co-star, typically as The Three Stooges' ally or a major enemy. He also made several educational short films. He joined Columbia in 1935 and stayed there until 1953. He retired in the early 50s after going blind as a result of diabetes. He is known for his roles in The Shadow (1937), Malice in the Palace (1949), and Fiddlers Three (1948). He married three times but had no children. He passed away at the age of 68 from a heart attack on November 5, 1963, in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, USA.
