He is an American former officer, engineer, and astronaut. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and a Master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. He appeared in several documentaries, such as Space Station 3D (2002).
