Raúl Ernesto Ruiz Pino was an experimental Chilean filmmaker, writer, and teacher, born in Puerto Montt, Chile. He directed more than 100 films. Ruiz left his university studies in theology and law to write 100 plays. He then worked in Chilean and Mexican television and studied at a film school in Argentina in 1964. He made his feature debut in Three Sad Tigers (1968), and his notable credits include Three Crowns of the Sailor (1983) and The Wandering Soap Opera (2017). Raúl Ruiz won many awards, among them is the award for Best Latin-American Film for The Wandering Soap Opera at the 2017 Mar del Plata Film Festival. He died on August 19, 2011, in Paris, France, of a lung infection.
