An African-American actress, prominent on stage and screen, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1960 for Take a Giant Step. Among her notable works are Green Mansions (1959), The Leech Woman (1960), and The Green Pastures (1959). She married William Hensley and they had one child. She died in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, on November 5, 1968, at age 81.
