An American film and television actor, born as August Eugene Schilling in New York, USA. He started out in burlesque comedy and usually played nervous comic roles. At the beginning of his career, he worked as an understudy on Broadway. He frequently appeared in Orson Welles'...Read more films. He had a relationship with Betty Rowland, and they toured with the Minsky burlesque troupe. In 1945, he was arrested for drug possession and confessed that the drugs were his to save his wife from arrest, but he was later acquitted. His notable works include Citizen Kane (1941), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), and Macbeth (1948). He died of a heart attack in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, on June 16, 1957, at the age of 48.
