A British film actress, born to an Irish father and a Welsh mother in Darjeeling, Bengal, British India, as Joan O'Callaghan. She left India at the age of 13, and when she moved to Wales, she worked as a waitress before moving to London to work as a model. In Hollywood, she played the roles of Hindu, Mexican, Korean, and African women, but drugs and alcohol contributed to the premature end of her career. She was married twice, including to Marlon Brando, and had one child. She won the Cartagena International Film Festival Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1961. Her works include The Mountain (1956), Night of the Quarter Moon (1959), and Battle Hymn (1957). She died in Woodland, Washington, USA, on August 16, 2015, at the age of 80.
