She was a member of the Katherine Dunham Dance Company and the first African-American ballet dancer to perform with the Paris Opera Company. She began dancing ballet at the age of eight, and at the age of sixteen, she joined a ballet school and was the only black student. She finished high school and received a scholarship to study dance. She toured with Katherine Dunham's troupe in Europe and South America, participated in Broadway musicals, and appeared on the covers of many of her husband, musician Miles Davis's albums. She also appeared in one movie, and after her retirement, she worked as a hostess in several restaurants in Los Angeles.
