American film, television, and theater actress, born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York State, USA. She got married three times and has two children. Among her most important works are Pete and Gladys (1960-1962), Meet Me in Las Vegas (1956), The Defiant Ones (1958), and Boomerang! (1947). She was born to an Austrian Jewish father and a Romanian Jewish mother. She began acting when she was a child and continued into her teenage years. After her parents separated, she headed with her mother to Hollywood, joined the Hollywood School for the Gifted, and worked in radio and animation. At the age of 16, she signed a contract with Fox, and played secondary roles in dramas, light comedies, and musicals, during the war years, where she played the roles of cheerful secretaries, graceful saleswomen, and heroines’ friends. After the war, conditions improved, especially in the theater, and she got major roles in cinema until she finally received an Oscar nomination as a supporting actress. She also starred on television and presented her program. Then her career began to decline, and she retired in the early 1980s. She died in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California, USA, on December 9, 2021, from a heart attack, at the age of 96.
