Renowned artist Hend Rostom has rejected calls by members of the Egyptian public to try the ousted president Hosni Mubarak and stated that that is not exemplary Egyptian behavior particularly because the man has a long history with the Egyptian people and should not be taken to trial because of his age. With regards to her opinion towards what has been happening in Egypt over the past few months, Rostom said: “I wouldn’t know whether to call what has happened a revolution or chaos. I know that the revolution was built on an understanding or a principle but there were many things which happened that I did not like at all. I was hurt to learn of those who suffered material losses and had the sources of their livelihoods subjected to theft and looting and this was due to the lack of order.” This was according to her interview with the Rose al-Youssif newspaper.Hend Rostom further added: “If this revolution was genuine then why is it that those who came out did not object to the regime and the corruption and why did they not come out to object against everything that could be considered corruption so that it could be evaluated and amended?”On another note, Rostom declared her unequivocal support for the continuance of article two of the Egyptian constitution due to our need for Islamic law to organize our lives. Thus she explained: “There is a need for the Islamic religion and for rule according to Islamic law after things have become disorganized and old values were lost. We now follow the Western model and have become distanced from religion.” In that same context she has announced her acceptance of rule by the Muslim Brotherhood whereby she has said: “What’s wrong with being ruled by the Brotherhood? Isn’t the Muslim Brotherhood Egyptian? Why should we not allow rule by the largest organized entity in Egypt? If it happens that they fail to implement what is required to serve Egypt’s interests (whatever serves my country I will support), it will not make a difference to me whether it’s the Muslim Brotherhood or not.”With regards to the candidate whom she will support for the presidency of Egypt, Hend Rostom declared her support for ‘Amr Moussa and her reservation with regards to Dr. Mohamed al-Barade’i: “Personally I will choose ‘Amr Moussa because he is characterized by political experience which makes one feel secure with regards to the future. Moreover he is characterized by daring and popularity, however al-Barade’i for example was abroad for many years and at a point which was critical to the country. No one can claim that he was in exile and thus he cannot be the president because he did not experience what we experienced and Egypt’s presidency needs a politician.”
