Prisoners Tops North America's Box Office in its First Week

The Hugh Jackman led crime thriller Prisonershas made it to the top in American theaters, making $21.4 million in its first week.The film is about a man on a quest to find his kidnapped daughter and her boyfriend. Jake Gyllenhaalco-stars, along with Paul Dano, Melissa Leo and Terrence Howard. Prisoners is Jackamn's second film to top the box office this year, after The Wolverine, which enjoyed the same success last July.

Insidious Chapter 2 came in the second place, one step down from last week's position, as it earned $14.5 million, increasing its total revenue to $60.8 million. Robert De Niro's The Family came next, making another step down from last week's second position, with $7 million in its pocket this week.

Instructions not Included made a two-step leap forward, landing at number four this week, after earning $5.7 million, adding up to a total of $34.2 million. The newcomer Battle of the Year 3D, starring Chris Brown, about an American dance crew trying to win back the title of the biggest dance competition in the world, earned $5 million in its first week and landed at number 5.

After adding $4.6 million to its total revenue, We're the Millers came at number six, while The Butler moved back again to land at number 7, earning $4.3 million. Riddick made a big retreat from last week's third position, arriving at number 8 this week with $3.6 million.

Another newcomer this week was the classic The Wizard of Oz, which was produced in 1939, and is now re-released in 3D and IMAX. It took the number 9 spot, making a $3 million start. Planes was the tenth and last entry on the list, after adding $2.8 million to its revenue.
