Ender's Game Tops American Box Office in its First Week

Ender's Game topped the American box office this week, two days after its theaterrelease, earning $28 million from 3,407 theaters around the states. The film isa sci-fi about a child named Ender who gets chosen to save the planet fromalien danger threatening to exterminate human life. Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsleyand Asa Butterfield co-star in the $110 million adventure film.

Bad Grandpa stepped down to number two this week after topping last week's list, earning$20.5 million and reaching a total gross of $62 million. The film has beenrated "R" for strongcrude and sexual content.

Thenewcomer Last Vegas came third this week after earning $16,520 million from3,065 theaters. The film is about three friends in their sixties who decide tovisit Las Vegas to throw a bachelor's party for a fourth friend, the last of them to be getting married.The film stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline.

The animation Free Birds, another newcomerthis week, landed at number four, and earned $16.2 million. The film featuresthe voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler. Gravitymade a bigleap backwards to number five, after coming second last week and topping thethree consecutive weeks before, with only $13.1 million.

Captain Philips also took three steps back,landing at number six and earning $8.5 million, while 12 Years a Slave movedforward to number 7 this week, and reached a total gross of $8.7 million, afterearning $4.6 million this week.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs arrivedat number 8 this week, after landing fifth last week, and earned $4.2 million,while the horror Carriemanaged with $3.4 million to arrive at number 9. Cominglast on the list was The Counselor, in its second week of release, adding only$3.2 million to its total gross.
