Egyptian Documentary “Al Midan” Wins Top Award at IDA

The documentary “ Al Midan” (The Square) byEgyptian/American director Jehane Noujaim was awarded the bestnon-fiction film for 2013 by the International DocumentaryAssociation.

The film focuses on the revolutionagainst former president Housni Mubarak, and the violations made bysecurity forces protesters in Tahrir square and Mohamed Mahmoudstreet. Noujaim spent 20 months shooting the film, and was beaten andarrested for 36 hours by police forces during the shooting period.The film won the audience awards at both Sundance and Toronto filmfestivals.

The film is participating in the Dubai International Film Festival in it's 10th edition, which iscurrently taking place, and it will be screened next Wednesday andThursday as it is competing for the Arab Muhr for best documentary.

The Sqaure is also competing with 14other films on the short list for the best documentary Oscar. Thefinal five nominees will be announced on the 16th of nextJanuary.
