Nawal is a simple girl who lives with her brother, the lawyer Mamdouh, who steals from the money entrusted to him; then Taher Pasha his employer requests the hand of Nawal, Mamdouh's sister, as a kind of extortion. Nawal accepts, in order to save her brother, until she finds love with Khaled.

Nawal is a simple girl who lives with her brother, a youthful lawyer name Mamdouh. Mamdouh embezzles part of a fund entrusted to him and when his boss, Taher Basha, learns of this he asks for his sister’s hand in marriage as a sort of extortion. Nawal accepts in order to save her brother’s future and that of his wife and she is thereafter thrust into the tortures of living with a man who does not know the meaning of love. She is granted a great deal of relief when she receives a son name Hani. Nawal then travels to Upper Egypt in order to meet her brother who had moved there in order to live far away from his sister’s sacrifice. Once there she meets Khaled – the man whose love she wanted and who she would have married had it not been for her sacrifice on her brother’s behalf. Thus mutual love develops between the two and the news makes its way to her husband’s circles. Nawal asks her husband for a divorce but Taher Basha expels her from his home and stops her from seeing her son without consenting to the divorce. She travels with Khaled to Lebanon where the media secure photographs of them together. This new development plays into the hands of Taher and gives him further means for extortion. Thus Nawal’s only choices become either to forget about her son and securing a divorce or to be imprisoned for adultery. Khaled is martyred in the 1948 war and Taher’s revenge is secured whereby he divorces Nawal. Nawal wishes to return to her son but Taher refuses whereby Nawal decides that her only way out is death.
