Ahmad Saba 'al-Layl is a poor man who joins the armed forces and becomes a guard at detention camps. He learns blind obedience and that all prisoners are enemies of the country. Then his old friend, Hussein Wahdan is arrested with a group of left-wing students and he refuses to torture him.

Ahmed Sabe' El Leil (Ahmed Zaki), a young poor farmer, is serving his mandatory military year. For his perfect eye sight and aiming skills he's chosen as a prison Guard. At the prison he sees the political prisoners who are labeled as the nation's enemy. A new batch of prisoners reach the prison, among them is the intellectual old friend from the village, Hussein Wahdan. Through Hussein the young guard discovers that the so called enemies are actually heroic revolutionaries. A portrait of Egypt in the sixties and seventies the movie is an acclaimed masterpiece.
