Alia Al-Mundhir, Asmahan's mother, stays with her three children at Beirut, while Fahd is stationed on the mountain with the mujahideen against the French occupation. Due to the french authorities' constant interrogation of Alia, she and her children flee to Egypt.

Alia reaches Egypt where she lives in a humble section of Cairo with her children and does laundry and sewing for a living. Meanwhile, Amal is enrolled in a school, Farid works as a delivery boy, and Fouad, who objects to his mother's and sister's career in dancing, works at a factory.
