A married couple who recently lost their baby, decide to adopt a 9 year-old girl named Esther from an orphanage. As they start to get to know her, they uncover dark secrets about her past that threaten their lives.

This picture is a horror film directed by Spanish-born director Jaume Collet-Serra. Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) are a married couple that are going through a rough patch. Their third child was stillborn and this has had a devastating impact on the couple, Kate in particular. Thus, they adopt Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a 9-year-old Russian orphan. Almost immediately upon her joining their household things start to go terribly wrong. Although Kate and John’s son, Daniel, senses right from the very start that there is something strange about Esther, his sister has no such sensations and rather welcomes Esther into the family. Soon afterwards, Kate also begins to learn that Esther is not quite as innocent as she appears. Thus, it is up to Kate and Daniel to catch Esther red-handed before her murderous schemes are fulfilled.
