In 2006, DCI Sam Tyler gets involved in a car accident and awakens in 1973 to find himself a DI assigned to investigate a series of murders perpetrated using the same method in both 2006 and 1973.

Tyler is at odds with his fellow detective Gene when he deliberately presses charges against an armed robber, Kim Trent, with no evidence, upon which Tyler releases Trent.

When a murder takes place in a textile factory, Hunt believes that Ted Bannister, the union organizer, is the perpetrator. Moreover, Tyler is taken aback when he discovers that the crime scene is the same place where he lives in the future.

Sam attempts to eradicate police corruption, whereupon he pays a visit to his mother, whom he learns is threatened by the same big shot who bribes police officers, but as he offers her help, she misinterprets his offer.

When a Manchester United fan is killed, suspicion falls on a Manchester City fan. To learn more, Sam disguises himself as a bartender at the Trafford Arms pub.

When a handyman at the local newspaper office takes hostages, Sam is at a loss when he discovers that the deadline of the hostage-taker is the same as the time of his death in 2006.

Sam competes against CID as he attempts to unearth the truth behind the death of the drug dealer Billy Kemble in jail, and when he obtains proof of what happened to Billy, Sam must make a critical choice regarding the team.

Sam finally comes to terms with his new life, until he meets his 29-year-old father, Vic, whom Gene suspects is involved in a crime.
