Caroline Ryan is a pediatrician in a Massachusetts village, married to the handsome sculptor Ben. Their marriage is stable and delightful. Their lives are disturbed when the police informs them that their son Jacob is accused of killing his teenage friend. When Jacob returns home, they find him dishonest about the events of that night. They hire a lawyer assigned to help Jacob escape the case.
