In 1981, Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings pose as a married American couple, when they're actually undercover KGB agents. After they abduct a Soviet defector, they find themselves being monitored by FBI agent Stan Beeman.

As Philip and Elizabeth are tasked with planting a bug in the office of the Secretary of Defense, they force his maid to help them with their plot. Stan tries to recruit a Soviet embassy clerk to work for the FBI.

The FBI traces a dead Soviet agent and finds out that he had a wife and child. The FBI uses them bait to try to catch the Jennings. Rob's widow gives Philip a coded note that leads him to obtain schematics for an anti-missile laser.

The FBI suspects that the KGB might be involved in the assassination attempt on President Reagan. The Jennings investigate the Secretary of State Alexander Haig, and suspect he may have access to the launch codes of the nuclear arsenal.

Elizabeth contacts a KGB agent codenamed "Udacha", and the FBI tries to track him down. Philip and Elizabeth are trying to locate an encryption device. The KGB finds out that they have a spy among them.

As the KGB tries to locate the mole, the Jennings are questioned by KGB agents. The Jennings start pointing fingers at each other. Stan devises a plan to protect his mole from being discovered.

Philip and Elizabeth's marriage is tested when a job to discredit a Polish dissident leads Philip to reunite with an old lover. Elizabeth tries to make amends with Philip.

Elizabeth finds out about Philip's affair with Irina. The Jennings track down an assassin who's hired to kill American scientists, and the FBI pursues him as well.

The children are shocked when Philip and Elizabeth tell them that they're separating. FBI agent Gaad wants to assassinate the new KGB agent Arkady after Amador goes missing.

In the aftermath of Amador's death, the KGB orders Gregory to return to Moscow, but he declines. Stan's wife wants him to quit the FBI and go somewhere else.

Elizabeth wants to retaliate following the CIA execution of three KGB officials in Moscow. Elizabeth attempts to reconcile with Philip, and has a confrontation with Claudia.

Elizabeth meets with a source who leads her to an Air Force colonel who has information about the SDI project. Philip secretly marries Martha to ensure her loyalty. Nina admits that she's a spy for the Americans.

Philip and Elizabeth fear that their operations might be a set-up, while the FBI is on their tail. Elizabeth's source, Prince, confesses everything he knows to the FBI.
