After he managed to wreck his career as a professional baseball pitcher, Kenny Powers is left without any alternative but to return to his hometown, where he takes a job as a substitute gym teacher at his old middle school.

Desperate to make money, Kenny ends up being the spokesman for a car dealership, but his efforts end on a bad note. As Kenny gets high at a school dance, he confesses his love for his old sweetheart, April.

As Kenny hires the music teacher Stevie as his assistant, he makes him take the fall for his car crash. In order to fix his money problems, Kenny ends up selling his baseball memorabilia online, much to his disappointment.

In an attempt to give Kenny's professional career a push, Stevie makes a DVD of his greatest moments. As Kenny goes with Tracy to a barbecue at April and Terrence's house, things get out of control when Terrence gets drunk and embarrasses Kenny in front of everyone.

After Terrence gives him a wake-up call, Kenny lets go of his dream of reviving his career in professional baseball. Kenny meets a familiar face from the past, his old rival Reg Mackworthy.

Kenny finally catches a break when he's offered a big-league job offer in Tampa. As he bids April and his family farewell, Kenny finds out a shocking surprise.
