As Nurse Jenny Lee starts her new work as a midwife at the nursing convent of Nonnatus House in the Poplar district of London, she must adjust to the rough conditions in order to prove that she's the right person for the job.

When the new midwife Chummy Browne arrives at Nonnatus House, she's faced with a hard challenge, while Jenny is at shock with how the Church is treating a pregnant prostitute.

As Jenny becomes friends with an old soldier, she's saddened by his poor living conditions, while someone from her past makes a surprise appearance into her life.

When a baby is kidnapped, Jenny might be the only person who can find the culprit. Cynthia helps out a seriously-ill patient.

When the cleaner Peggy's brother is very sick, the nuns and midwives at Nonnatus House do their best to help him out. Jenny is visited by a person from her past, while Chummy is getting ready for an urgent meeting.

As Jenny reconnects with her ex-lover, Chummy receives an unexpected visit from her aristocratic mother, who wants her to end her relationship with the local policeman Peter.
