In the mid-16th century, Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland arrives at the French court to marry Prince Francis, heir to the French throne. Things, however, take an unexpected turn when Mary meets Bash, her fiancé's half-brother, while Francis's mother, Queen Catherine, seeks to break off the engagement.

Madeleine, Prince Charles' fiancée, arrives on a ship, accompanied by an English emissary named Simon, who tries to end the union between the French and the Scots. As Mary learns of new plots against her from a girl who hides in the secret passages of the castle, she and Francis decide to cooperate.

As Queen Mary learns that English troops are marching toward Scotland, she turns to King Henry for succor, but he declines. Prince Tomas of Portugal proposes to Mary and vows to help her defeat the English, so she tells Francis, who tries to force King Henry to come to Mary's aid.

After the killing of French soldiers, Simon is sentenced to death. Prince Tomas' real intentions are revealed, whereupon Prince Francis and Bash confront him, which leads to a fatal face-off. Mary reaches a new agreement with the French monarch regarding the terms of her marriage to Francis.

Queen Catherine summons Lady Olivia, Francis' former inamorata, in an attempt to get rid of Mary, who confides her worries to Bash. Aylee is blackmailed by Catherine into spying on Mary. Bash gets into trouble with pagans as he interrupts a sacred rite of theirs which involves a human sacrifice.

As the pagans demand that Mary be sacrificed, Lady Diane tells Bash to find someone else to replace her. Francis learns that Mary and Bash are attracted to each other, much to his discontent. At the instigation of Catherine, Olivia tries to get Francis to impregnate her.

Wishing to avenge his son's death, an Italian count captures the castle and its residents in King Henry's absence, prompting Mary and Catherine to unite to get everyone to safety with Clarissa's help. Francis becomes intimate with Mary. Bash makes a startling discovery about his mother, Lady Diane.

Upon receiving news that the English monarch is at death's door, King Henry tries to expedite the wedding of Francis and Mary. As Catherine tells Mary of Nostradamus' prophecy regarding Francis' demise, the soothsayer informs Mary that he foresees another death, leading her to make a big decision.

Mary and Bash are returned to the castle after their escape attempt. Catherine continues her plot against Francis and Mary’s relationship. Francis finds out about the prophecy.

Queen Catherine is suspected of plotting against Bash. A pregnant woman named Isobel with a mysterious connection to Bash is wrongfully imprisoned, and Mary offers to help. Lola blackmails the queen.

After his return from Rome, Henry accuses Catherine of adultery to execute her. Catherine learns about Isobel’s baby. She also had an affair and a baby long before Francis was born, it was a girl named Clarissa.

Clarissa kidnaps King Henry and Catherine’s younger children, the thing that drives Queen Catherine, Mary, and Bash to try to find them together. Lola tries to help her indebted brother but ends up being rescued by Francis.

It’s time for Mary to make up her mind, she needs to base her choice depending on her country and her own needs. Her decision gets harder when Francis shows up to court with Lola. And more so when her mother arrives in France.

After a two-month honeymoon, Francis and Mary return to court and so do their old secrets. In the meantime, The king and queen get closer over tales of shedding blood.

Women in court try to pick the perfect suitor, yet Lola refuses to participate. Henry’s violent fits continue, which drives Kenna to fear for herself. Bash sets out to find the truth about the darkness.

Francis agrees to help Bash uncover the horrors of the woods, which in turn puts him in danger. A servant wins the "Queen for a Day" event, which makes Henry obsessed with her.

Mary discovers a secret clause while rereading her marriage contract.

James, Mary’s brother, visits her in France in an attempt to take her back to Scotland. Francis discovers a ploy to unravel the truth of Mary, and it drives them apart.

Mary’s uncle comes bearing news about Marie De Guise. Henry makes some bad choices. Bash and Kenna work on their wedding.

Mary hires a mercenary to help her, which leads her to realize just how far she’s willing to go for her country. Francis leads the French army in a harsh battle against the English. The closer Lola gets to Julien, the wryer she gets.

The king’s crazy antics force Catherine and Mary into an alliance to stop him. Bash finds a boy alive after meeting the darkness, and now he’s more than ready to end it. Julien reveals his motives.

To have Mary, Henry plans to murder Francis. Leith returns for Greer. Lola goes into labor. Mary and Catherine plan a rebellion. Pascal sees the darkness once more.
