Abu Arab, the head of the neighborhood stops his son, Dhafer, from fighting against his sister getting an education, and takes him to work with him at the café against his will. The French occupation stops the people from praying at the mosque due to resistance posters.
Salma's father (Abu Salma) is released from prison and wants his daughter Salma to return from her uncle’s place but she refuses since her father killed her mother. Tamim and Fares work with the resistance.
Magdi tells Joureya he likes her and wants to marry her. Abu Salma stabs Abu Arab for standing against him taking his daughter back, but Abu Arab is saved by the doctor. The Agha trusts Faysal with the work in his lands.
Abu Arab recovers, and the neighborhood people stand with him as he fights with Abu Salma for stabbing him. The Agha sets boundaries for Faysal at work. Joureya tells Magdi that she must finish school before marriage. Dhafer tells Fadwa that he loves her. The resistance continues.
A police officer warns Abu Arab that the neighborhood will be searched. Dhafer fights with Mounir for attacking Fadwa, and Abu Arab tries to solve the problem with Abu Salma's help.
Abu Arab’s wife asks him to open up a shop for Dhafer. Abu Salma confesses to him that he didn’t kill his wife and that his brother, Abu Khater, is the real killer.
Joureya and her brother Fares protest against the occupation and Maria falls in love with Fares. Her sister warns her that the religious differences will doom her love. Abu Arab tries to help Abu Salma see his daughter, who refuses to see him ever again.
Maria asks Fares to stay away from her. Dhafer begins working in his new shop. Abu Salma insults the neighborhood's elder who complains to Abu Arab.
Fares tell Joureya that Maria dumped him and that he wants to marry Marwa. Magdi tells Fares that he wants to marry his sister, Joureya, which saddens Fares as Magdi kept it a secret from him. Abu Salma apologizes to the neighborhood’s elder. Fares leaves home and joins Tamim in the resistance.
Maria confesses to her mother that she loves a guy from another religion. Abu Arab tries to confront Abu Khater and make him confess, but he eludes him. Salma suspects that he’s the one who killed her mother so she leaves his home for Abu Arab’s. Fadwa conspires with Marzouk to seize Dhafer's shop.
Abu Khater confesses to murdering Salma’s mom, so Abu Arab kicks him out of the neighborhood. Dhafer agrees to give Fadwa the shop. The Agha thinks of marrying his daughter to Faysal. Tamim and Fares continue with the resistance.
Abu Salma wants to get revenge on Abu Khater. Tamim’s shot dead in a crossfire with the French soldiers. Joureya joins a demonstration, and her brother sees her take her Hijab off to aid an injured man, so he tells their father who stops her from going to school. Dhafer marries Fadwa.
Fares returns to the neighborhood to inform his father of Tamim’s death. Wassef Bek intervenes in the Agha’s work, and Faysal stands up to him. Joureya learns that Dhafer was peeking into her room. Dhafer treats Magdi's father (Abu Magdi) badly and gives him a very low wage.
Fares learns of Dhafer’s doings and warns him that he will inform Abu Arab. Fares tries to convince his father to send Joureya back to school. Salma refuses to go back to her father unless he avenges her mother and kills Abu Khater. Sorour's hand must be amputated as it developed gangrene.
Magdi tells his father that he wants to marry Joureya. Salma bluntly asks her father to kill Abu Khater. Fares asks for Magdi’s help to take Joureya back to school. Dhafer hits Fadwa so she decides to get even.
Faysal asks the Agha for his daughter's hand in marriage. Maria’s mom wants to marry her off to Joseph to keep her away from Fares. Wassef Bek pays Amer to burn down the Agha’s stores. Fares promises Maria that he won’t marry anyone but her, and tells his father about Magdi’s wish to marry Joureya.
Magdi and his father go to ask for Joureya’s hand. An officer searches Abu Arab’s house as they suspect fares' involvement with the resistance. Fares prepares for a new mission with the resistance. Dhafer tells Salma that he likes her.
Marzouk tells Dhafer that he saw Joureya with Magdi. Dhafer tells his father, who wants to kill Joureya but her mom stops him. Jaber dies while fighting the occupation soldiers. Faysal is suspected for the warehouse fire. Faysal asks Abu Arab for money but he refuses him.
Magdi goes with his father to apologize for meeting Joureya behind her family’s back, and to ask for her hand, but Abu Arab declines both. Joureya tells Salma to tell Magdi to run away with her, but Salma informs Dhafer of her plan.
As Marzouk plans to steal Joureya’s father’s money by marrying her, he reports Magdi for opposing the French. Magdi gets detained and tortured. Faysal collaborates with Wassif Bek against the Agha when the former gives him the money he needs. He goes to the Agha, who apologizes for suspecting him.
Under torture, Magdi gives up Fares as an accomplice in the resistance. Joureya runs away from home to meet Magdi. When he doesn’t show up, she goes to stay with Shakir’s mother (Um Shakir) as she doesn’t want to return to her family. Abu Arab is determined to kill her.
Fares plans an attack on French camps to free Syrian captives. Fayaal marries the Agha’s daughter and burns down Wassef Bek’s warehouse. Fares warns Dhafer to stay away from Joureya. Magdi is still held captive and tortured.
Abu Arab divorces his wife who finds her daughter at Um Shakir’s house when she goes to stay with her. Faysal gets Asem to take responsibility for the warehouse burning. Wassef asks Faysal to kill the Agha but Faysal tells him to ask Amer to do it. Dhafer asks Selim to detain Fares.
Abu Arab goes to get his daughter form Um Shakir’s and asks his wife to forgive him. The French soldiers capture Fares and torture him. Amer kills the Agha, and Faysal turns him in. Dhafer tells his father Marzouk that he wants to marry Joureya, but she refuses. Fares meets Magdi in captivity.
Selim tells Dhafer that his father asked him to find Fares, and he tells him not to say a word. Faysal starts working with Wassef. Noticing Fares’ absence, his fellow resistance members visit his father and learn he that was arrested. Omar arranges a raid to free Fares.
Abu Arab forces Joureya to marry Marzouk, who treats her badly. Magdi and Fares continue to be tortured by French soldiers. Dhafer tells Selim to convince Abu Arab that Fares died, which saddens him, and he starts thinking about avenging his son’s death.
Shahd mourns her father. The commandant wants Selim to spy for him. Dhafer steals his mother’s jewelry when she has a stroke after her son’s death. Abu Arab joins Omar’s group to avenge Fares’ death, and they collaborate with Abu Mus’ad’s group to stop the French raids and free their prisoners.
Dhafer decides to run his father’s business after he left, and rents his shop to Marzouk. Dhafer can’t divorce Fadwa, although he wants to. Selim meets Fares and tells him that Dhafer is the one who turned him in. Selim becomes a double agent between Abu Arab and the commandant.
Salma can’t forgive Abu Khater so she kills him and returns to her father. Abu Arab continues his fight against the French, and the commandant tells Selim to kill him. Abu Arab survives but loses his sight. He is saddened by what Dhafer has done and puts his house up for sale.
After years in captivity, Magdi and Fares return, with the latter plotting revenge on Dhafer, who finds out that his wife’s cheating on him with Marzouk, so he murders him. Abu Arab tries to compensate Joureya for everything she has been through and rejects Faysal’s offer to buy his house.
