After finding out that his ex-girlfriend Nini is dating E. J., Ricky attempts to get back together with her by auditioning for East High School production, "High School Musical."

After Ricky is selected to play the lead role of Troy, E.J. gets jealous for losing the role to him, while Nini feels uncomfortable around Ricky. Gina teams up with E.J. in order to keep Ricky away from Nini.

As E. J. attempts to get in the way of Ricky's efforts to reach out to Nini, Gina and Nini's relationship becomes tense. A misunderstanding takes place between Mr. Mazzara and Miss Jenn regarding the prop phone she brought.

Nini and E.J. have a confrontation after she finds out that he stole her phone. Miss Jenn asks the students to not let their personal issues get in the way of the rehearsals. Ricky is shocked after learning that his mother wants to separate from his father.

As the homecoming dance arrives, Nini decides not to go following her breakup with E.J. Miss Jenn tries to keep Nini motivated by taking her to a karaoke lounge. Gina and E.J. go to the dance together.

After Miss Jenn is suspended from work, Carlos takes her place. As the students are devastated by the news, they decide to work together to make the school board bring her back. When Ricky bonds with Gina, Nini gets jealous.

As Ashlyn invites the cast of the play to her house for a party, she encourages Nini to write songs about her own feelings. Miss Jenn and Mr. Mazzara spend time together while working on school projects.

After an accident makes the cast of the play unable to do their rehearsals at the school, Carlos saves the situation by finding another theater for them to rehearse, which triggers unpleasant memories for Miss Jenn. Nini and Ricky share a special moment while doing a private rehearsal.

As the big opening night arrives, the team struggles to give their best performance, but unexpected surprises put their talents to the test. Ricky and Nini are afraid to express their feelings for each other.

As Nini and Ricky perform together on stage, they finally express their true feelings for each other. Ashlyn and Big Red share a special moment. Nini receives good news regarding her future.
