An Egyptian novelist, short story writer and translator, born on January 13, 1935 in Giza. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, Department of History in 1956, and also obtained a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication, Division of Radio and Television, in 1973. He worked as a translator for the Egypt State Information Service between 1956 and 1957. From 1981 to 1995, he lived in Geneva, where he worked as a translator for the United Nations. He published his first short story collection 1972, entitled The Engagement, after which his work varied between short story collections, such as: Yesterday I Dreamed of You, and novels such as: Aunt Safiya & the Monastery, and Sunset Oasis. Bahaa Taher won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (Arabic Booker Prize) for his novel Sunset Oasis in 2008. He also won the State Prize for Literature in 1998.
