Indian actress and director, who was born on 15 October 1957 in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. She studied at Delhi and Harvard universities. Her first film Salaam Bombay! won the Golden Camera Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. She often collaborates with Sonny Traborivala on screenwriting, whom she met while studying at Harvard. She won several awards, including the National Film Festival, and was nominated more than once for the Golden Globe and BAFTA Festival. She was also awarded the Best Indian Abroad award for 2007. In 2012 she was awarded a medal by the Indian president. |
