She is an American writer, born on December 7, 1956 in Boston, Massachusetts. She began writing at thirteen when she went away to Concord Academy. She attended Boston University from 1974–75 and graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in English in 1978. She also has an M.F.A. in writing from Columbia University. She is known for Stealing Beauty (1996) and co-wrote Evening (2007), which is based on her own novel of the same title, with Michael Cunningham.
