Rock Hudson was born in Winnetka, Illinois, on November 17, 1925 as Roy Harold Scherer Jr. Hudson was born to a father who worked as an auto mechanic and was separated from his mother at the age of eight. After graduating from high school, he worked as a postal employee. During World War II he worked as an aircraft mechanic, and after the war he worked as a truck driver. His physique gave him the opportunity to work in the cinema, and he took lessons in acting, singing, fencing and horse riding. His first movie was Fighter Squadron (1948), and in 1956 he was nominated for an Oscar for the movie Giant, after which he went to star in light comedies, especially with Doris Day. Rock Hudson is considered the first famous person in the world to contract AIDS, and has been used in propaganda to combat this disease. Among his most notable films are Written on the Wind (1956), Pillow Talk (1959), and McMillan & Wife (1971). Rock Hudson died on October 2, 1985 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California.
