American director born on 1 February 1894 to Irish parents. He moved to California in 1914 to begin his career in filmmaking. Some of his most notable works are The Informer (1935), Stagecoach (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), The Quiet Man (1952), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). He passed away on 31 August 1973 in California due to stomach cancer.
