An English novelist, born in North London to an English father and a Jamaican mother. She studied English at the University of Cambridge and graduated in 1997. In 2000, she published her first novel entitled White Teeth, in which she presented a picture glowing with the life and movement of contemporary London in all its glory. It won several awards, most notably the Guardian Newspaper Award for First Book, the Whitbread Award for Best Book, and the Commonwealth Book Award. Then, in 2002, she published her second novel, entitled The Autograph Man. In 2003, Granta magazine included her in the list of the twenty best young novelists in Britain. Her third novel, “On Beauty,” was published in 2005, and recently won the Orange Literary Prize (known as the Women's Prize for Fiction). She then published a book containing a collection of essays entitled The Morality of the Novel (a.k.a. Fail Better).
