A Moroccan novelist, playwright, and screenwriter, born in Casablanca. He was imprisoned by the Moroccan government (1974-1975) in the infamous Moulay al-Sheriff prison, during the notorious Years of Lead, and worked as a teacher of the French language in Casablanca. He joined the Union of Moroccan Writers in 1982. He has many novels and plays published, and his first play, The Barber in the Poor District, was adapted into a film directed by the late Mohamed Reggab in 1982. His novel "Hashish" won the Grand Atlas Prize in 2001, and his ninth novel "A Rare Blue Bird that Flies with Me" won the Arabic Booker Prize in 2014. His films include A Love Affair in Casablanca (1991), Mektoub (1996), and Job Application (2005).
