A South Vietnamese politician, born on January 3, 1901 in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. He was appointed by Head of State Bảo Đại to the post of Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam in 1954. He was removed from power after winning a fraudulent referendum in October of 1955, and declared the establishment of the First Republic of Vietnam. He was a Catholic leader and was opposed by the Buddhists. Diem was assassinated along with his brother, Ngô Đình Nhu, on November 2, 1963, during a coup backed by the CIA after continuous Buddhist demonstrations broke out and were accompanied by non-violent resistance. He appeared as himself in works such as Hearts and Minds (1974).
