She worked in cinema in the thirties, and on television in the mid-forties, and she often played the roles of eccentric and frail old ladies. She was married four times and had no children. Among her notable works are Murder by Death (1976), The Producers (1967) and Quality Street (1937). She died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, on June 20, 1984, at age 101.
