Lebanese writer and director, who was born in Tripoli in 1953 to a Lebanese father and an Iraqi mother. Randa was influenced by her parents' left-wing ideology. She studied film directing in the Sorbonne, and started making documentaries in the Lumiere Institute in 1978, starting with “Khatwa bi Khatwa” (Step by Step). Her other documentaries included “Shashat El Raml” (Sand Screens), “Horoobona Al Ta'isha” (Our Fierce Wars) and a documentary about legendary left-wing artist El Sheikh Imam. In the mid-90's, Randa shifted to narrative. She directed “Al Kafiroon” (The Infidels) in 1997, and “Al Motahadiroon” (The Civilized) in 1999, which was officially selected in the competition of Venice Film Festival, where she was later awarded the Silver Bear for her film “A Taira Al Waraqiya” (The Kite). Randa Shahal Sabbagh died of cancer in 2008.
