American writer Linda Woolverton is best known for her work as a screenwriter for fantasy and animated films including Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) and “The Lion King” (1994). She was born in Long Beach, California in 1952 and received a BFA in Theatre Arts from California State University. Woolverton became the first woman to write an animated feature for Disney in 1991 with her screenplay “Beauty and the Beast,” which was the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. She also wrote the screenplay for the recent adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), making her the first and only woman with a sole writing credit on a movie that grossed a billion dollars. Woolverton has also written two novels, several theatrical productions and multiple television series. Her various writing credits include: “Dennis the Menace” (TV; 1986), “Star Wars: Ewoks” (TV; 1986), “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey” (Film; 1993), “Aida” (Theatre; 2000), “Artic Tale” (Film; 2007), and “Maleficent” (2014).
