American singer, songwriter, actor, and social activist. He was born on March 1, 1927, and is one of the most successful Caribbean American pop stars in history. He was called the "King of the Calypso" for popularizing the Caribbean style of music to an international audience in the 1950s. His hit album Calypso (1956) was the first album by a solo singer to sell one million copies. He acted in several movies, the most famous of which are BlacKkKlansman (2018), and The One and Only Dick Gregory movie (2021). |
