Indian film director and writer, born in Punjab, India in 1950. She studied philosophy at the University of New Delhi and later immigrated to Canada and obtained Canadian citizenship. Her first film, Sam & Mewon Honorable Mention in the Camera d'Or category of the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. Her tribology Fire, Earth, and Water trilogy, which depicts oppression and sexism in modern Indian history won Best Foreign Language Film. She adapted Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children to a movie in 2012. |
