A French actor, born on August 19, 1903, in Corbeil-Essonnes, Essonne, France, as Claude Marie Eugène Legrand. He married 3 times; the first was to actress Rosine Deréan, and they divorced, the second was to actress Maria Mauban (1953-1955), with whom he had a child, and the marriage also ended in divorce, and the third time was to actress Norma Eberhardt (1955-1978), remaining with her until his death. Among his most notable works are Le Plaisir (1952), Is Paris Burning? (1966), Barbarella (1968), and The Tenant (1976).
Dauphin received his primary education at the École Fénelon and his secondary education at the Lycée Condorcet. He also studied literature and philosophy at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Dauphin served in the French and Allied armies in WWII, and after the fall of France, he participated in the French resistance movement, then joined the Free French forces of DeGaulle. He was forced to flee to England, quickly learned English, and became a liaison officer between the French LeClerc division and the press corps of the American Army of General Patton, which helped him work in American cinema. Dauphin also worked for a long time in Broadway theaters, and following a screen test with Warner Bros., he returned to Paris, then was called to Hollywood to work in the movie April in Paris, starring Doris Day. Claude Dauphin died on November 16, 1978, in Paris, France, of intestinal occlusion.
