An American playwright and writer, born on April 27, 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is considered one of the most brilliant African-American playwrights. On the first of April of 1965, August decided to become a writer and bought his first writing machine. Late this year, he moved into a spacious house and began to engage in a series of petty jobs to help him earn his living. That same year, he co-founded a workshop and listened for the first time to recordings of the black singer Bessie Smith, which had a major influence on August Wilson's determination to address the cultural and historical experience of Negroes in his literary works. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017 and won the Black Film Critics Circle Award in 2016. He died on October 2, 2005 in Seattle, Washington, of liver cancer.
