An English novelist, playwright, and broadcaster born on September 13, 1894 in Bradford, Yorkshire. After graduating from Cambridge University, he worked as a journalist in London since 1922. He published 26 novels as well as many plays. He wrote his novels in the traditional realistic style known in the nineteenth century, and his most famous novel is The Good Companions. He wrote many non-fiction works, including Literature and Western Man (Book, 1960). He is known for the play, Dangerous Corner which mocks middle-class life. He also wrote the novel Time and the Conway Family (1937), which is a science fiction genre. He died on August 14, 1984, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom.
