    A British actress born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom on February 18, 1933 as Eileen Mary Ure and died in London, England, United Kingdom on April 3, 1975 from an overdose of a barbiturate sedative. She was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award in 1961 for the movie Sons and Lovers (1960). She married twice and had four children. Her most important works are Sons and Lovers (1960), Where Eagles Dare (1968), and Look Back in Anger (1959). Born to a civil engineer father, Mary Ure attended Mount School in York, trained on stage at the Central School of Recitation and Drama in London. She played the Virgin Mary in 1951 in The British Theater Festival and won a grant to join a radio drama company, but she rejected the grant. She was known as a theater actress, and she made her first appearance in London in 1954. In 1958, she appeared on Broadway in New York and received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Theater Actress. She performed a successful season with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, and despite her pregnancy, she performed the play The Changeling (1960) at the Royal Theater in London. She continued to act in theatrical work during her film career for 13 years, but her growing addiction to alcohol affected her career to the point that she was fired from the play Love for Love in 1974 before it was shown on Broadway. As for her film career, she started with the movie Storm Over the Nile (1955) and then starred in the movie Windom's Way (1957). She presented the movie Sons and Lovers (1960), which nominated her for the Golden Globe Awards and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. After a setback for 3 years, she returned with The Mind Benders (1963) with Dirk Bogard. Her last work was A Reflection of Fear (1972), in which her husband co-starred with her. She suffered from alcohol addiction in the early seventies, with her mental health continuing to deteriorate. On April 2, 1975, she appeared on stage on opening night and died of alcohol and an overdose of hypnotic.
