She was an American actress, born on March 11, 1898, in Massillon, Ohio, USA. As she was born into a broken family, she started acting when her mother started an acting career in order to provide for the family. When she met the fellow child actress Mary Pickford in 1912, she got her extra work with Biograph Pictures. She landed the lead roles in over 100 productions. Dorothy and her sister, Lillian Gish, participated in several films together. She retired from performing on screen in 1928, with the exception of a few occasional appearances, but she had a long and successful theatre career. She is known for Gretchen the Greenhorn (1916), Little Meena's Romance (1916), and Battling Jane (1918). Her last silent movie was Madame Pompadour (1927). She passed away on June 4, 1968, in Rapallo, Liguria, Italy, from bronchial pneumonia.
