An American actress, born in Tularosa, New Mexico, USA, on August 26, 1917, as Jane Byral Clayton. She was nominated for two Primetime Emmys in 1957 and 1958 and received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Clayton married three times and had four children. She is known for Lassie (1954-1957), This Man's Navy (1945) and Flight Angels (1940).
She was the only child of two teachers. She began singing at the age of four and studied at Tularosa High School, graduating in 1935, then studied music and drama at Gulf Park College for Women in Gulfport, Mississippi. She performed in many musicals in Broadway theaters, then worked in cinema. She became addicted to alcohol after the death of her 16-year-old daughter in a road accident, and after her recovery, she joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1970 and helped other alcoholics to get back to their lives. She died in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, on August 28, 1983, of cancer.
