Among his most important works are Last of the Summer Wine (1973), Night of the Demon (1957), and Porridge (1974-1977). Wilde was a film and television character actor, known for his socially ambitious comedic characters. He attended Hertford Grammar School and RADA. He also voice-acted in animated works for children. Brian Wilde died at the age of 80 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom, on March 20, 2008, following complications from a fall.
