The film is based on the novel "The Black Thirst" for the Swiss writer, Hanz Roche, and deals with a conflict between two imaginary Arab kingdoms on the oil that an American businessman discovers in a disputed land between them.Banderas plays the role of an Arab king who is intellectually progressive, who wages a war and wins it against the other Arab king who is a strong believer in tradition. To secure a truce between both kingdoms, the traditional king places his two sons in the custody of the the victorious king, where they grow up in an atmosphere of openness to Western culture, till the oil is rediscovered and the conflict returns again, but under extremely complex familial circumstances.
